Rapid Melting of Expanded Polyethylene by Localized Infrared Heating

Using a halogen point heater, we locally irradiated expanded polyethylene (EPE) with infrared radiation and observed its thermal response. The irradiated area quickly reached high temperatures, causing the EPE to rapidly soften and melt. This is a clear example of how localized infrared heating affects lightweight materials sensitive to heat.
